Jorge Pérez And Dani Aranzubia Will Reportedly Join Joseba Etxeberria’s Coaching Staff At Bilbao Athletic
There hasn’t been any official announcement, but Joseba Etxeberria will be the next manager of Bilbao Athletic. Sources claim that an agreement is already in place and many others are taking it for granted at this point. Signing the former club legend has been one of the biggest goals for Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta and the change will take place after the season comes to an end.
As Etxeberria prepares to return to Lezama he is currently working on putting together his coaching staff. Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo has reported that two assistants have already been identified. Jorge Pérez is expected to be the assistant coach while Dani Aranzubia will serve as the goalkeeper coach. Both played alongside Etxeberria at Athletic Club.
Aranzubia was an Athletic player from 2000-2008 and has been coaching goalkeepers for a few years now. He served under Aitor Larrazabal at Amorebieta but chose to stay at the club when Larrazabal left for Barakaldo. Aranzubia then joined Etxeberria at CD Basconia but was unable to make the move to Tenerife. The two have a very close relationship and have worked well together.
Pérez wore the Athletic shirt from 1998-2000 but never established himself in the team. He retired from football in 2012 and recently coached Lorca in the Segunda B before resigning in January of 2018 and joining Etxeberria at Tenerife. Of course, Athletic will not announce anything until the current season ends, but seeing Joseba Etxeberria return to the club to manage Bilbao Athletic will be a huge victory for Rafa Alkorta and President Aitor Elizegi.
