Former Lorca Manager Fabri González “Asier Villalibre Is Going To Explode”
Asier Villalibre did not enjoy life outside of Athletic. After making his first team debut in 2016 the young striker left for loan spells with Numancia, Real Valladolid, and Lorca and failed to establish himself in the second division. Despite the struggles, his former Lorca manager, Fabri González believes that he has the potential to be a big success in La Liga.
“I’d say yes, he could handle the first division, he’s going to explode”, González told Javier Beltrán of El Correo. “I am convinced that he can play in the Primera if someone gives him the confidence that perhaps he didn’t have last year. I’m glad that he’s scored 20 goals, he’s a great kid.”
González is now coaching Ukranian club Karpaty Lviv, but still has a lot of admiration of Villalibre. He recognizes that playing at Lorca was difficult for the striker and is certain that he has all the talent necessary to score a lot of goals in his career.
“He’s an extraordinary kid; very hardworking and professional. He came to us from Valladolid where he wasn’t playing a lot, nor scoring goals. When he came to us maybe he didn’t have the opportunities that he should have or if he did have them, he didn’t know how to make the most of them. It was hard for the team to score goals, but he always trained well. He had no luck in front of goal, but he can score goals.”
Returning to Bilbao Athletic this season has helped Asier Villalibre rediscover his confidence. The 21-year-old has played in all 32 games for the reserves, scoring 20 goals and providing 5 assists. Villalibre’s contract is set to expire in June, but he and Athletic are expected to reach an agreement for a renewal that will also give the Lezama product the chance to train with the first team during the summer.
