Athletic Target Ander Herrera Is Keeping His Options Open Ahead Of Summer Move
Athletic are serious about their pursuit of Ander Herrera. The Basques would love to bring the midfielder back to San Mamés but know it will be difficult. Herrera’s contract with Manchester United is set to expire in June and reports suggest that he already has a substantial offer from PSG. Still, nothing is final and Athletic are hopeful of convincing the 29-year-old to return.
“Right now I’m focused on football and beating Barcelona”, Herrera told ABC ahead of this week’s Champions League fixture. “It’s true that I only have two months left on my contract and today Manchester United and I don’t see things the same way on the renewal terms. There is no renewal agreement but my duty is to continue listening to United. I will listen to United, of course, but I will also listen to other clubs. I won’t close the door on anyone. I don’t want to rule out any options at the moment.”
Sources claim that Herrera and Manchester United haven’t been able to reach an agreement due to the midfielder’s wage demands. If that’s the case and PSG truly are leading the race to sign Herrera it will be difficult for Athletic to convince him otherwise. The Basque giants haven’t given up on their pursuit of Herrera who plans to keep playing football at a high level.
“What I know is that I will continue playing for a big team”, he continued. “I have taken care of myself. I’m playing well and I want to keep playing for as long as possible, as long as my body allows, because the day after I retire I will begin regretting having retired.” Gaizka Garitano and Rafa Alkorta have already begun making plans for next season and will do everything possible to sign Ander Herrera this summer.
