Ibai Gómez Leaves Getafe Match With Ankle Injury, Mikel San José Suspended For Next Match
Gaizka Garitano had a few difficult decisions to make going into Sunday’s match against Getafe. With Ander Capa and Iker Muniain both unavailable the manager needed to adjust the team which saw Ibai Gómez return to the starting lineup. Athletic were in control of the game for the first 15 minutes, defending well and attacking, but Gómez wouldn’t get to enjoy it for long.
In the 16th minute, Gómez challenged for a header but came down awkwardly. His left ankle twisted after landing on his opponent’s boot and the winger immediately started limping. Gómez wasn’t able to continue and quickly motioned to the bench for a substitute. Markel Susaeta quickly warmed up and came into the game replacing the 29-year-old.
Gaizka Garitano didn’t offer much positivity after the match. “Ibai’s injury was an inconvenience”, he began. “He was playing well and will miss some time because there is a lot of damage. It’s pretty bad.” The club has already announced that he has a sprain and will undergo further tests once the team returns to Bilbao. With Capa also nursing an injury Garitano’s options on the right are limited which could leave Athletic in a precarious situation next weekend against Rayo Vallecano.
Mikel San José will definitely miss the next match against Rayo after being shown a yellow card early in the first half against Getafe. It was the midfielder’s 5th booking of the season which means he will serve a one-game suspension. Dani García and Beñat will be expected to partner in the midfield.
