Iago Herrerín “We Must Continue To Add Points, As Many As Possible”

Iago Herrerín didn’t have much to deal with in Sunday’s match against Getafe, but in the few moments that he was called on he was put in a difficult situation. The goalkeeper did make one great save though he was unable to stop Angel’s winner in the 78th minute. The 31-year-old was, understandably, unhappy about the loss. He recognized that it was a badly missed opportunity and says that Athletic must keep adding points.

“Córdoba had that opportunity and in the second half we had no chances. They had two chances. We knew it would be a direct and long game. It was a small blow, a small step back, although nobody would have thought we’d be in this position for months. Now we have Rayo on Sunday. We must continue to add points, as many as possible. We see ourselves right there in the fight and this team fights every game. We will fight for something beautiful.”

The goalkeeper went on to explain that Getafe only had three chances to find the back of the net, but it was enough to down the Lions. Still, Herrerín believes that he has been playing great football as of late and hopes that the team can qualify for Europe.

“Angel hit the ball between my hand and leg. There are times when you touch it and sometimes you don’t. They had three chances. One hit the post, one I saved, and the other was a goal. I think the goalkeepers had less work to do, but we have to be ready for every shot. I feel calm. I’m at ease and I’m competing well. For me, the most beautiful thing would be going back to Europe and enjoy that experience again.”

The biggest moment of Sunday’s match came after just 15 minutes when Ibai Gómez had to be taken off with an ankle injury. “It’s bad luck with Capa and Ibai, but we have recovered Aduriz who is very important for us”, Herrerín said. “Ibai was in a lot of pain. He left in a boot, but we will see.” Athletic will be without Capa, Gómez, and Mikel San José for their next game against Rayo, but will see the return of Iker Muniain.
