Aritz Aduriz Makes Return 87 Days After Knee Injury
When Aritz Aduriz injured his knee against Sevilla back in January no one really thought much of it. Replay showed that his knee had collided with a defender’s during a scramble for the ball in the box and the club announced after the game that he had suffered a sprain. An early diagnosis suggested that the striker would miss a couple of weeks at the most, but it proved to be much more serious.
Further tests revealed more significant ligament damage than previously expected. Aduriz would eventually meet with knee specialists and there was even concern that he would have to undergo season-ending surgery. His Athletic and footballing career appeared to be in jeopardy but the 38-year-old had one goal in mind. He wanted to get back on the field this season and prove that he could continue playing.
Aduriz had been training normally over the past few weeks leading up to Sunday’s match against Getafe, but the club was being cautious with his return. On Saturday Gaizka Garitano revealed that the striker was ready to play and had been called up to the squad. The moment finally came in the 79th minute when Aduriz came on for Iñigo Córdoba in Athletic’s 1-0 loss to Getafe.
After the game, Garitano admitted that Aduriz really didn’t have enough minutes to make an impact on the match. That being said, just getting back on the field was a very big deal. It had been 87 days since the injury and the striker had achieved his goal. Now, with just seven games remaining on the schedule, Artiz Aduriz could play a major role in Athletic’s pursuit of European qualification.
