Iker Muniain Suspended For Getafe Clash
If you had said back in December that Athletic would be in a position to qualify for Europe with 8 games left in the season you would have been met with a lot of laughter. At the time the Lions were 18th in the table and struggled to win games. Then, Gaizka Garitano took over as manager and everything changed. Right now the Basques are just 4 points off of 4th place Getafe and will travel to Coliseum Alfonso Pérez for a huge match on Sunday.
Athletic have won three straight games and five out of their last seven. Beating Getafe could bring the team to within a single point of the final Champions League spot in the table, but it definitely won’t be easy. Getafe has been one of the strongest teams in the league this season and Athletic will have to make do without a couple of very important players.
To begin with, Iker Muniain will not be available. The midfielder was shown his fifth yellow card of the season during Wednesday night’s 3-2 win over Levante and will serve a one-game suspension. Muniain has actually started on the bench in the last two games, but not even having him as an option is a clear disadvantage for manager Gaizka Garitano.
Ander Capa will also miss the match with a muscle injury in his right leg. The defender had to leave the game against Levante early in the second half and is expected to be sidelined for about two weeks. Oscar De Marcos will once again take his place at right-back, but being without both stars complicates things for the Zurigorri. Garitano will be hoping to get his selection right because every single point is vital at this stage of the season and a win could jettison Athletic into the top 6.
