Yuri Berchiche “I’m At My Best Right Now”
Athletic may not have been at their best on Wednesday night, but they did enough to take all three points in a 3-2 win over Levante. Yuri Berchiche continued his fine form, scoring the opening goal, and making things really difficult for the visitors. After the game, he admitted that the Lions had trouble with Levante and were lucky to come away with a victory.
“In the first half, without doing anything great, we were able to be up 2-0”, he explained. “Levante had to take a step forward and they played fast up front. We were lucky that we were awarded a penalty in the last play and for Iker’s goal to keep the victory here.” Berchiche then agreed that he’s playing his best football of the season and was happy to find the back of the next from a difficult shot.
“I’m at my best right now. It’s been hard to score goals this year. When my first touch is long and I usually decide to try the shot. This time it went in. If we are getting these results it’s because the team has taken a step forward. We knew that we had a good team and we are playing much better than we were in the first half of the season.”
With 43 points now in the bag, Berchiche didn’t hide from the fact that Athletic are now in a race for Europe. The left-back stated with confidence that finishing in the top 6 is the team’s goal at this point and they have to keep performing at a high level if that is going to become a reality.
“It’s clear what the objective is, that it’s changed completely. Europe is the target. The team must go for a ticket to Europe. We are in our best moment. It’s difficult for us to win, but we must go with the mentality to continue like this against Getafe. Those ahead of us aren’t dropping many points so we have to keep playing this way.” Athletic trail 4th place by only 4 points and will travel to Getafe on Sunday with another chance to keep climbing the table.
