Iñigo Córdoba “We Can Think Of Other Objectives Now”
Iñigo Córdoba played arguably his best game for Athletic in Wednesday night’s 3-2 win over Levante. The winger caused constant problems for the visitors, helped out defensively, and assisted on the team’s first two goals. It was a fantastic performance by the 22-year-old who has quickly found his footing in Gaizka Garitano’s system.
“We took a step back and let them control the game”, Córdoba told Athletic TV when asked about Levante’s comeback in the second half. “Levante is a team that has the ability to create danger and they made us suffer. I was happy to give two assists. I saw both passes and took them.”
After a terrible start to the season, the Lions now find themselves just 4 points off of 4th place with a chance to cut the gap even lower on Sunday with a trip to Getafe. “We have had a hard time, but we can think of other objectives now.” Córdoba also reiterated the statements of teammate Yuri Berchiche who admitted that the goal is finishing in the top 6 this season. “We have a nice month and a half left with the goal of qualifying for Europe.”
The match wasn’t without drama. Athletic were awarded a penalty in stoppage time which Iker Muniain converted to win the game. Some didn’t think the call was right, but Córdoba was in agreement. “For me, it was a clear penalty when it happened live”, he answered. “I don’t know what they are protesting. Seeing it live, I would have bet that it was a penalty.” Either way, the Zurigorri are now just 4 points off of 4th place heading into Sunday’s trip to Getafe.
