Athletic’s goalkeeper situation has been in good shape despite seeing Kepa Arrizabalaga leave for Chelsea in the summer. Iago Herrerín has established himself as the starter while having statistically the best season of any goalkeeper in La Liga not named Jab Oblak. The future, too, is great with Unai Simón having already proven himself this season.

Truthfully, it’s been a crazy year for the Lezama product. He signed a contract extension back in mid-July, renewing with Athletic through 2023, then joined Elche on loan. The move wouldn’t last long as he was quickly brought back in August and was thrust into the starting lineup in the first game of the season. Simón performed at a high level until Herrerín returned from injury and has since solidified his place in the first team.

On Monday the club further guaranteed Simón’s future at San Mamés. Athletic announced that the 21-year-old has signed an improved contract which will still run through 2023 but also raises his release clause from €30 million to €50 million. The club may have not revealed the details of the wages, but several sources confirm that Simón also received a deserved wage increase as well.

“I am very happy to have updated my contract with this great family that has given me so much since I was a child”, Simón told Athletic TV. “I promise that I will continue fighting and leaning on my teammates to be able to stay here for a long time.” To celebrate his new contract, club legend José Ángel Iribar presented Unai Simón with a framed picture from the debut earlier this season against Leganés.
