Lezama Weekend Recap: Red Hot CD Basconia And Titles Around The Corner
Izarra 0-0 Bilbao Athletic
Bilbao Athletic extended their unbeaten streak to 5 games after Sunday’s scoreless draw against Izarra. It was a very tough match at Merkatondoa where neither side was able to create any real chances. The point was enough to keep the Katxorros in the top 6 of the league table, but they will need more to have a realistic chance of qualifying for the promotional playoffs. Aritz Solabarrieta’s side will be back in action on Saturday when they host Racing at Lezama.
CD Basconia 4-1 Bermeo
With another big win, CD Basconia have now moved into 3rd place in the league table. On Sunday they hosted Bermeo and were stunned to go down 1-0 after just 5 minutes. Juan Artola responded at the half-hour mark, finishing off an assist from Álvaro Nuñez. Bermeo then saw a player sent off and Basconia were able to capitalize in the second half with a brace from Ewan Urain and an own goal. The Basauritarras have lost just once in their last 13 games and will look to extend that run on Saturday with a trip to Sodupe.
Amorebieta 1-3 Athletic Juvenil A
The Athletic Juvenil A team have completely turned around their season. They entered the weekend having lost just once in their last 11 games but faced a difficult challenge on Sunday when they traveled to Amorebieta. Diego Fernández, David Hernández, and Beñat Gerenabarrena all found the back of the net to lead the Katxorros to a thrilling 3-1 win. With just two games left, they won’t be able to finish in the top four, though they can still climb the table on Sunday with a trip to AD San Juan.
Athletic Juvenil B 3-0 Tolosa
Last weekend Athletic’s Juvenil B team suffered their first loss in 11 games. They were determined to bounce back quickly and did just that on Saturday, defeating visiting Tolosa 3-0 at Lezama. Nico Williams, Mikel Mendibe, and Koldo Ferrer were the goalscorers who secured another three points for the Kumeak who now hold a 9 point lead over Real Sociedad at the top of the table. With just three games left to play, Sunday’s trip to Leioa could decide the title.
Vasconia 1-1 Athletic Cadete A
Sunday’s 1-1 draw against hosts Vasconia saw Athletic’s Cadete A extend their unbeaten streak to 7 games. The Katxorros are now in a position to compete for a top 4 finish over the last three games of the season. They will be back in action on Sunday as Deusto visits Lezama.
Athletic Cadete B 1-1 Galdakao
Athletic Cadete B hosted a dangerous Galdakao side at Lezama on Saturday in what would end in a 1-1 draw. The team’s 4 game winning streak ended, but they are still unbeaten in their last six matches. At the moment, the Kumeak hold an 8 point lead over Leioa at the top of the table and will travel to Retuerto on Sunday.
Athletic Infantil A 9-1 Danok Bat (Aimar Vicandi 5, Gaizka Alboniga-Menor 3 y Peio Canales.)
The perfect season continued for Athletic Infantil A who defeated visitors Danok Bat 9-1 on Saturday. Aimar Vicandi scored 5 goals, Gaizka Alboniga-Menor added 3 of his own, and Peio Canales struck once as the team cruised to their 21st win of the season. They hold a commanding lead at the top of the table and will face off with the Athletic Infantil B team on Saturday.
Athletic Infantil C 4-2 Barakaldo
San Mamés 2006 won their third straight game on Saturday, defeating Barakaldo 4-2 at Lezama. The Katxorros have lost just once in their last 7 matches and will travel to Begoña on Saturday for another difficult fixture.
Athletic Alevín A 2-2 Lagun Artea
San Mamés 2007 were in danger of losing three straight games when they hosted Lagun Artea on Saturday. The Katxorros played a challenging match and were able to secure an important 2-2 draw. Next up is a trip to Lemoa Harroni this coming Saturday.
Romo 2-0 Athletic Alevín B
Alirón 2007 have struggled as of late and were the only academy team to suffer a loss over the weekend. They fell 2-0 to hosts Romo and are now winless in their last 5 matches. This Saturday presents the chance to snap the streak as they host Balmaseda at Lezama.
Athletic Alevín C 7-4 Balmaseda
San Mamés 2008 made it 11 straight wins over the weekend, defeating Balmaseda 7-4 at Lezama. After losing the first game of the season, the Alevín C team have yet to fall again and are soaring in the league. They will travel to Unión Sport on Saturday with hopes of keeping the streak alive.
Askartza 2-12 Athletic Alevín D
The weekend brought another victory for Alirón 2008 who traveled to Askartza on Saturday and returned home with a 12-2 win. The Alevín D team haven’t lost a single game all year and have drawn just once. With 5 games left on the schedule, there is a real chance they could go the entire season without suffering defeat. They will be back in action on Saturday when Montefuerte visits Lezama.
Loiola Indautxu 2-7 Athletic Alevín E
The Athletic Alevín E team made it five straight wins on Saturday, defeating hosts Loiola Indautxu 7-2. They’ve scored 43 goals during the streak and have conceded just four times. The Katxorros will host Astrabuduako at Lezama on Saturday having already won the previous meeting 6-2 earlier this season.
