Aritz Solabarrieta “We Will Fight Until The Last Day Of The Season”
Bilbao Athletic played one of their most difficult games of the season on Sunday when they traveled to Izarra. The field at Merkatondoa was in poor shape and it negatively affected the team’s ability to find a rhythm or play their best football. The game would eventually end in a scoreless draw and manager Aritz Solabarrieta told reporters afterward that he was proud of how his team fought.
“I’m very satisfied with what the players have done. This is a very complicated field, it’s difficult to play here. The field is what it is and it forces you to do different things that we aren’t used to. The players have made a tremendous effort and it was a shame not to have scored a goal. The players are tired, and we have some injuries. I have no reproach for the players, just encouragement to continue. We will fight until the last day of the season.”
Solabarrieta noted that the Katxorros were much better in the second half, but were still unable to find the back of the net. Still, the draw earned them a point and Bilbao Athletic are now just 8 points off of the promotional playoff zone of the league table.
“They tried to press us high up the field. In the first half it was harder for us to connect with the strikers, but in the second half more things happened on their side of the field. We had chances with Salado, Villalibre, and Larrazabal. In the second half we played a good game and created chances, but we couldn’t find the goal. We are closer to the top 4 than we were before the game and we will fight until the end. Even if we don’t reach our goal I’m very proud of the group, of these players. We will make things difficult for those above us.”
With just 8 games remaining on the schedule Bilbao Athletic are still in the battle for the top 4, but it won’t be easy. The Kumeak still face difficult matches against Racing, Sporting, and Barakaldo which will determine whether or not they will really have a chance to qualify for the promotional playoffs this year.
