Ander Capa Cleared For Friday’s Match Against Girona
Athletic have been without Ander Capa for the entire month of March after the right-back suffered a hamstring injury in training. He’s already missed three games, during which the Lions lost to Valencia, drew with Espanyol, and defeated Atlético Madrid for the first time since 2013. Gaizka Garitano has covered the absence well, but he won’t have to do so any longer.
Capa returned to training just before the international break and has been doing well. There have been no complications and he was even able to play a few minutes during Thursday’s friendly against Eibar at Lezama. On Monday the 27-year-old continued training normally and has now been fully cleared to participate in Friday night’s match at Montilivi against Girona.
At this point, there is a very real chance that Capa could be back in the starting lineup on Friday, with Oscar De Marcos returning to the wing or possibly beginning the game on the bench. Either way, having Capa back in the team is a big deal for Athletic and Garitano who finally has the entire squad fully healthy and at his disposal at Lezama.
Aritz Aduriz has been training normally as well, though he won’t be featuring on Friday night. The striker has missed over 2 months with a serious knee injury and is still awaiting medical clearance to get back on the field. The hope is that he will be able to make his return at some point in April. Only 10 games remain on the calendar and Athletic are determined to fight for a top 7 finish until the very last day of the season.
