Oihan Sancet Makes Return From Torn ACL In Bilbao Athletic’s Win Over Arenas Club
It’s been a special weekend around Athletic Club. The first team won 2-0 at San Mamés on Saturday, defeating Atlético Madrid for the first time since 2013. Kenan Kodro scored his first goal for the Zuriggori. Iago Herrerín made his 100th appearance for the Lions. Iñigo Lekue made his season debut after dealing with injuries all year. And Bilbao Athletic pulled off a 2-1 comeback win over Arenas at Lezama on Sunday.
There are a lot of great storylines surrounding the club at the moment, but none more important than what happened during the 70th minute of Bilbao Athletic’s match against Arenas Club. Manager Aritz Solabarrieta motioned to the bench, the substitution board went up, and Oihan Sancet made his return after spending the last 6 months recovering from a torn ACL.
The injury took place in the second game of the season and Sancet has been working hard every single day to get back on the field. He’s trained normally over the past few weeks and when he was included in the squad for Sunday’s match there was hope that he would get the chance. When the moment finally came, Lezama roared in celebration.
Sancet may have only played 20 minutes, but they were important minutes. The 18-year-old looked strong and composed, playing without the fear of his recent injury. After such a long absence it’s imperative that players be worked back into a regular football rhythm and the midfielder took his first steps towards that in his return on Sunday. Getting back on the field was a big moment for Oihan Sancet and now that he’s done it, he can start battling for his place in the starting lineup.
