Yeray Suspended For Athletic’s Next Match Against Girona
Athletic secured what was arguably their biggest win of the season on Saturday, defeating Atlético Madrid 2-0 at San Mamés. With Iñigo Martinez out suspended, it was up to Unai Nuñez and Yeray to lead the defense and they did a flawless job. Atlético were held scoreless and struggled the entire match to create chances in front of goal.
Before the game, Nuñez said in an interview that he believes he’s already proved that he can play at the same level as Yeray and Martinez. He put in a solid performance against Atlético and will have the opportunity to be in the lineup once again in the team’s next match. Yeray was shown a yellow card late in the second half for a foul on Diego Costa (his 10th of the season) and will be suspended when Athletic travel to Girona after the international break.
In the past, Nuñez has struggled to play alongside Yeray as the left center-back. To counter this, Garitano moved Yeray to the left instead and both defenders were excellent. In fact, Yeray was arguably the best player on the field. Unless something unforeseen happens, Nuñez will be starting on the right against Girona with Iñigo Martinez back in the lineup at his natural position. Having three top-level center-backs in the team is a luxury for Garitano who will now have the entire international break to put together his plans for the next match.
