Iago Herrerín Makes 100th Appearance For Athletic Club In Win Over Atlético Madrid
Athletic’s 2-0 win over Atlético Madrid on Saturday was a very special night for Iago Herrerín. To begin with, it was the first time the goalkeeper had won against his former club. The 31-year-old made two big saves to keep a clean sheet as the Lions pulled off their most impressive victory of the season. Secondly, it was the goalkeeper’s 100th appearance for Athletic Club.
Herrerín has gone through a lot to get to this point. After returning to Athletic in 2012 he spent years sitting behind Gorka Iraizoz before doing the same for Kepa Arrizabalaga. This season he has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga and Saturday’s milestone meant quite a lot.
“This is the first time I’ve been the starter and it’s what I’ve always wanted”, Herrerín said during his press conference earlier this week. “I’ve wanted to enjoy this milestone for a long time and I’ve suffered a lot to get here. match with Athletic. I try to enjoy every minute and every game I play in goal because I know how hard it is to get there.”
Saturday saw Herrerín earn his 9th clean sheet of the season, putting him in the upper echelon of La Liga goalkeepers. Becoming the starter has helped build his confidence and he’s appreciative of the fact that he has the coach’s confidence. Now Iago Herrerín and Athletic will enjoy the international break as they start preparing for their trip to Girona on 29 March.
