“This was an important victory” (LaLiga)

Athletic beat Atlético Madrid for the first time since 2013 on Saturday, winning 2-0 at San Mamés. It was arguably the best performance all season and manager Gaizka Garitano was full of praise for his team after the match. He explained just how important the win was for the Lions who have now climbed into 9th place in the La Liga table.

“This was an important victory. We have beaten one of the best teams in the world and I think we did a great job. We moved the ball well and the work that my team did was amazing. Atlético only loses a few times each year and that makes the victory even more important. I value every match. We now have three more points than we did a few hours ago.”

Garitano went on to explain that the substitutions in the second half played a big role in the result. Iñigo Córdoba assisted on the first goal and Kenan Kodro scored just seconds after coming into the game. The Mister knows that the team is playing great football at the moment and says that they are already thinking about the next game.

“This team has a lot of maturity. This was a game about winning points, not a knockout round. At home, we are dominating and controlling games. We are doing what is necessary to get good results. Every center-back we have can play at a very high level. The substitutions gave us a bit of freshness and mobility that we needed up front. We will continue to work, always looking forward. Now we will focus on the next match against Girona. We have been playing good football. As you climb the table you are looser and have less fear of failure.”

Athletic haven’t lost a single league game at home since Gaizka Garitano took over as manager back in early December. The fans at San Mamés have also played a big role in the results. “The atmosphere on the field was impressive”, Garitano said. “I want to thank all the fans. Our team transmits a lot of energy and creates a good connection with the fans.”
