Iker Muniain And Iñigo Martinez Called To Spain National Team, Unai Simón Called To U21s
After Saturday’s match against Atlético Madrid the international break will officially begin for Athletic. The stoppage comes at a good time for the Lions who will have the opportunity to regroup ahead of the final stretch of the season. It will also see Aritz Aduriz and Ander Capa given the time to fully reintegrate into the team and move closer to getting back on the field. For two weeks the Lions will recharge, but not everyone.
On Friday Luis Enrique officially announced his squad for the Spain National Team which included Athletic stars Iker Muniain and Iñigo Martinez. Muniain has been in terrific form this season, especially over the past few months. He’s been the spark for the Lions who is able to take on defenders and create chances. Likewise, Martinez has been one of the best center-backs in Spain this year, forming a strong partnership with Yeray who was also in the running to be called up.
During this international break, Spain will be competing in their first matches of the EURO 2020 qualifiers. La Roja will be facing off with Norway at Valencia’s Mestalla on 23 March, followed by a trip to Ta’Qali Stadium on 26 March for a game against Malta.
Unai Simón will also be serving on international duty. The Athletic starlet was called up to Spain’s U21 team where he has featured as the starting goalkeeper for the past year. Simón has already made 11 appearances for the Zurigorri this season and is establishing himself as one of the leaders in the U21 side. Interestingly, defender Unai Nuñez was left out of the team, presumably because he has rarely played this year for Athletic.
