Gaizka Garitano Finally Has Entire Squad Available With Ander Capa Returning To Training

Ander Capa has returned to training after overcoming a strained hamstring (MD)

The improvements that Athletic have made under Gaizka Garitano are nothing short of remarkable. He took over a team that was drowning in the relegation zone, void of any confidence, and has introduced a style of football that is yielding impressive results. The Basques are now on the cusp of battling for European qualification and have done it without a healthy squad.

Earlier this week Aritz Aduriz finally returned to training after missing the last two months with a knee injury. He hasn’t had any complications, though he isn’t cleared to play again just yet. Then, Mikel Balenziaga left training early on Tuesday and missed the entire next day. He rejoined his teammates on Thursday, but Markel Susaeta was absent from Lezama which put his availability for Saturday’s game in question.

Luckily, Susaeta was back in training on Friday as was Ander Capa who has missed the last few weeks with a mild hamstring strain. Capa was already ruled out for Saturday’s clash with Atlético Madrid, however returning just before the international break will give the right-back plenty of time to reintegrate into the team before the next league game.

Having the entire squad healthy is a luxury that Garitano hasn’t been afforded until now. The upcoming international break will give the manager the opportunity to prepare his team for the final stretch of the season and he will finally have everyone available to choose from. The Zurigorri are still in the conversation to qualify for Europe, though they refuse to talk about it. Garitano’s side will continue to take it one game at a time and they will be in a very good position moving forward.
