Athletic Club Continue To Show Interest In Iñigo Ruiz De Galarreta
Athletic Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta has mentioned on more than one occasion that the club is keeping a close eye on every player who could potentially strengthen the squad this summer. He’s even dropped a few names such as Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente, but they aren’t the only ones. The Lions were also said to be interested in Las Palmas midfielder Iñigo Ruiz De Galarreta during the winter market and that hasn’t changed.
“Iñigo is a great player and we are attentive to what he’s doing”, Alkorta told Radio Popular. “Although, it is difficult because we already have a lot of players in his position.” The Sporting Director is correct. There is an overbooking in midfield to the point where players like Unai López, Ander Iturraspe, and Mikel Rico aren’t even making the squad. However, that could change.
Rico and Iturraspe are both set to leave the club this summer when their contracts expire and the future of López is still up in the air. Athletic could be looking to strengthen the midfield position this summer and, according to a report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo, they have continued to monitor Galarreta. The 25-year-old currently has a €30 million release clause, but Las Palmas are said to be willing to accept a much lower transfer fee.
Galarreta has been one of the best midfielders in the second division this year and clubs are taking notice. The report goes on to say that there are a few Primera teams that have shown interest in the former Lezama product, including Athletic. “Athletic was my home and will always be my home,” he told Radio Marca last month. Now that his injuries are a thing of the past he’s started to live up to the potential he always showed as a youth product, and Athletic are seriously considering making a move to bring Galarreta back to San Mamés.
