Athletic Club Still Eyeing A Move For Rayo Vallecano Starlet Sergio Moreno
Sergio Moreno was one of Athletic’s most talked about transfer targets earlier this season while Josu Urrutia was still the club’s President. The Rayo Vallecano starlet caught the eye of the Lions who wanted to sign him for Bilbao Athletic and give him the chance to train with the first team during the summer. Since Aitor Elizegi won the election in December there has been little talk of Moreno, but Athletic are still very interested.
According to an exclusive report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo, Elizegi and Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta have also set their sights on signing Moreno. Athletic tried to sign the 20-year-old in January but were unsuccessful. The Basques also offered Moreno a four-year contract back in December and that deal is still on the table should the young striker make the move to San Mamés.
Athletic’s interest in Sergio Moreno is founded in their desire to find a successor to Aritz Aduriz. Gorka Guruzeta, Asier Villalibre, and even Iñaki Williams are all seen as players who could become the striker of the future, but the club wants to have even more options. Moreno’s quality and potential suggest that he could be in the conversation as well if he is signed.
This summer Athletic will return for Sergio Moreno, but reaching a deal won’t be easy. To begin with, Rayo do not want to part ways with their talented young striker who has a release clause of €25 million. However, they would like to bring back Unai López which could shift the momentum in Athletic’s favor. If the club is relegated that could change things as well. Additionally, Real Madrid still have a preferential option on the 20-year-old which means that any negotiation would also have to include them if Athletic are going to make the transfer happen.
