Mirandés 1-1 Bilbao Athletic: Villalibre Secures Valuable Point With Stoppage Time Equalizer
Coming into the weekend Bilbao Athletic were 9 points off of the top 4 and their chances of qualifying for the promotional playoffs were fading fast. The Katxorros had yet to get a positive result away from home under Aritz Solabarrieta and that needed to change quickly. Traveling to face off with 2nd placed Mirandés on Sunday surely wouldn’t make things better, but having Gorka Guruzeta and Peru Nolaskoain in the team offered a boost.
The game started well with both sides having the ball, but Mirandés would open up the scoring after just 14 minutes. Finding themselves down early, and on the road, Bilbao Athletic were in a difficult situation. The Kumeak continued to attack with Guruzeta and Nolaskoain both getting chances, but their hosts defended well as the first half ended 1-0.
Although Bilbao Athletic refused to give up the minutes continued to tick away in the second half. It appeared as though they would be going back home empty-handed once again until the referee added four minutes of stoppage time. It would prove to be just enough to change the game as Asier Villalibre equalized moments before the final whistle.
Taking one point home might not seem like much, but it was a positive result at a very difficult stadium. The race for the top 4 isn’t over yet and results like this one could give the Katxorros the necessary momentum to make a run over the coming weeks. Next Sunday Bilbao Athletic will be back at Lezama where they will host Arenas Club who trail the Kumeak by just four points in the league table.
