Raúl García “We Have Learned That Every Point Is Important”
Athletic dominated Espanyol on Friday night, but the scoreline might not agree. The Lions had over 65% possession, 15 shots, and 50 crosses but found themselves down 1-0 with just 10 minutes left to play. Luckily, Raúl García was able to head home the equalizer to rescue a point at San Mamés. After the game he explained that the result wasn’t fair, but that the team has to be proud of how they fought for the draw.
“The tie doesn’t do us justice. It was not fair to be down 1-0, but the team had patience and searched for our goal. It’s true that we didn’t have many clear chances, but in the end we managed to tie the game. The team played well. It was difficult for us to score, but you can’t blame the team in that regard. Every game has it’s own tricks. We had to push forward. We had control and that gave us the chance to get the goal in the final stretch of the game.”
Rulo, as he is affectionately known in Bilbao, has scored the last four goals for Athletic. He knows that he is in good form at the moment, but doesn’t want the praise. The midfielder says that the entire team should be recognized for playing a great game and that they have to be satisfied with the draw because every point is valuable this season.
“I contribute what I can, but we need more players to score. Right now I’m on a roll, but I’m happy with the whole team. It’s unfair to say that I saved the team. Everyone contributes and the merit belongs to everyone. The draw isn’t the result we wanted, but it is a good result. I never look at the standings. I go match by match. We have spent months in a bad situation and we have learned that every point is important.”
Athletic have been taking the season one game at a time under Gaizka Garitano and now they will turn their focus to next Saturday’s match against Atlético Madrid. Raúl García will face off with his former club once again as the Lions look to pull off a big win and take all three points at San Mamés.
