Markel Susaeta “We Were Going To Keep Trying Until The Final Whistle”
Markel Susaeta was back in the starting lineup for Athletic on Friday night, making his 504th appearance for the Zurigorri. The Lions dominated Espanyol but needed an equalizer in the 80th minute to pull off a 1-1 draw. After the game the captain explained that Espanyol’s compact defense made things very difficult, but that Athletic refused to give up.
“We tried to win in every possible way. We knew that they were going to sit back and with the goal they have gone even further back, but we didn’t get nervous. Of course we didn’t have many clear chances. They played close to the box and were there on every cross that could have led to a goal. The tying goal came too late but we were going to keep trying until the final whistle.”
Susaeta’s contract with Athletic will expire in June and the 31-year-old admitted that he has yet to received a renewal offer. “There hasn’t been any offer yet, no approach” he said. “I still can’t say anything. When we sit down to talk, if we sit down, I’ll talk to them and then I’ll tell you. There hasn’t been any offer from this Board or from the previous one.” President Aitor Elizegi has publicly stated that he thinks a renewal will happen, but right now the club wants to focus on the season and not look too far into the future.
