Ibai Gómez “We Took The Initiative And Created Chances To Win The Game”
After struggling in last weekend’s loss to Valencia, Ibai Gómez found himself back on the bench Friday night as Athletic faced off with Espanyol. The winger wouldn’t come into the game until the 74th minute and his entrance proved to be the difference maker. Gómez wasn’t afraid to take on defenders and provided the assist for Raúl García’s equalizer with a stunning cross from the outside of his boot.
“I want to help the team with assists and goals”, he said to GOL after the match. “I’m happy to have played a role in the game.” Gómez was playing the best football of his career at Alavés before returning to Athletic in January and showed flashes of that form in his 15 minutes against Espanyol. He’s still looking for his first goal since the transfer, but the 29-year-old may have booked his place in the starting lineup next weekend against Atlético Madrid.
“The sensations can’t be good when we haven’t won”, Ibai continued. “We took the initiative and created chances to win the game, but we weren’t successful. Today if you go behind on the scoreboard, with how good the teams are, it is difficult to create chances. We have to leave satisfied because we never gave up.”
After Friday’s draw the Basques will immediately start preparing for Atlético Madrid. They will host the Colchoneros on Saturday at San Mamés in what will be the last game before the international break.
