Unai Nuñez receives his award from Onda Cero (AC)

Unai Nuñez was honored on Wednesday in the 18th annual sports awards by Onda Cero. The defender was given the award for being the most consistent player for Athletic last season, while Aritz Aduriz was recognized for being the team’s top goalscorer. It’s been a much different year for Nuñez this season as he has rarely played, but he recognizes that he has to be ready whenever his chance comes.

“What happened to me last year is something I will never forget. I have it recorded in my mind forever, but it’s in the past. Now I have to work in the present. It’s difficult not to be playing, but I understand that the coach is the one who makes these decisions. I have to be as good as possible and be ready for when I’m needed.”

Despite being on the bench nearly every weekend, Nuñez knows that the team has played at a much higher level under manager Gaizka Garitano. “Since Gaizka came the team has improved defensively and has grown a lot”, said the defender. “We have to continue like this.”

Nuñez will likely get the chance to be back on the field very soon. Both Yeray and Iñigo Martinez are one booking away from suspension and if either player is out of the lineup Nuñez would be the one to take their place. In the meantime, he is working hard and waiting for the opportunity to prove that deserves more minutes for the Zurigorri.
