Aritz Aduriz “I Have A Crazy Desire To Return”
Aritz Aduriz was honored on Wednesday in the 18th annual sports awards by Onda Cero. The striker was given the award for being Athletic’s top scorer last season, while Unai Nuñez was recognized for being the most consistent player. This year hasn’t been so good for Aduriz who has been out of action with a knee injury since early January, but he’s doing everything in power to return quickly.
“I’m training hard”, the 38-year-old said. “I feel better and better, with more confidence, although I’m still a little bit away from returning. I’ve realized that I’ve had a lot of luck so far with injuries because this is the most time I’ve spent away from the field. I have a crazy desire to return. There are still a lot of games left to finish the season.”
Athletic will reassess Aduriz’s situation in a few weeks to determine whether or not he can rejoin his teammates in training. The striker wants to be back on the field as soon as possible and recognizes that there is a lot of season left to be played. Athletic are in the conversation for European qualification, but Aduriz prefers to take it one game at a time.
“There are still a lot of games left. The form has been very good lately, although the start to the season was horrible and that’s difficult to turn around. Achieving permanence is the first priority. Dreaming about Europe isn’t prohibited, but we prefer to have caution. I see the team very well and there are games left. The team that holds up will be there near the top of the table.”
Aritz Aduriz has already been ruled out for the club’s next two matches against Espanyol and Atlético, but if his next assessment goes well he could be back in training during the international break. If that is the case he would then have two weeks to train and could possibly be back in the team for Athletic’s match against Girona on 29 March. His returns seems to be just around the corner, but the club will proceed won’t risk anything at this point.
