Iñigo Lekue Returns To Training At Lezama Following Lower Back Surgery
It’s been a difficult year for Iñigo Lekue. Over the summer the right-back wasn’t in the plans for then-manager Eduardo Berizzo and refused to leave on loan. He wanted to prove himself at Athletic, but didn’t even get the chance. Lekue suffered a fractured ankle in August and forced to undergo surgery. At the end of October things started to look better.
Lekue returned to training on 30 October and even competed in a friendly match in November. He was still not called up for official matches, though he was working hard to be ready when called on. Then disaster struck again in mid-December when the club revealed that the 25-year-old would have to undergo surgery to repair a disc in his lower back.
Since then Lekue has been rehabbing with Xabier Clemente in hopes of getting back on the field as soon as possible. Last week Athletic announced that the Lezama product was in the final stages of his recovery and on Monday he finally returned to regular training with his teammates at Lezama. Lekue was able to do all of the drills and play in the scrimmages organized by Garitano and could soon be cleared to play in an official game if needed.
Meanwhile, Ander Capa and Aritz Aduriz continued apart from the group. Capa suffered a hamstring injury last week and has been ruled out for 2-3 weeks. Likewise, Aduriz is still rehabbing from a knee injury and will be re-evaluated in 2-3 weeks to see if he is ready to rejoin his teammates. Yeray, Iñigo Martínez, Yuri Berchiche, and Beñat all did recovery work on Monday. In the meantime, Garitano has the team busy preparing for Friday’s match against Espanyol. The players will have Tuesday off, but will be back in training on Wednesday.
