Bilbao Athletic 2-2 Real Sociedad: Gaizka Larrazabal Nets Brace In Basque Derby Draw
Bilbao Athletic were looking to win their 8th straight game at home on Saturday as they welcomed Real Sociedad to Lezama. The two rivals entered the weekend separated by 4 points in the table and the Karxorros knew it was going to be a difficult fixture. It would take a strong start to the game to come away with a positive result and Aritz Solabarrieta’s team was up to the challenge.
In the opening minute of the game Gaizka Larrazabal stunned Real Sociedad when he blasted a shot from the right side of the box that caught the goalkeeper out of position. The early goal gave Bilbao Athletic control of the game, but it wouldn’t take long for the visitors to respond. Dani Vivian was called for a handball in the box in the 15th minute and the score was leveled.
Just 6 minutes later Bilbao Athletic would answer back when Larrazabal scored his second goal with an assist from Antonio Salado. Asier Benito nearly scored a third for the home side with a header, but his effort was off. The halftime whistle blew with Bilbao Athletic taking their 2-1 lead into the break.
In the second half Benito and Larrazabal teamed up to nearly score another goal. Bilbao Athletic were creating the better chances and in the 79th minute Larrazabal had a shot inside the box saved for a corner kick. Things changed in the 82nd minute when Zourdine finished off a cross into the box to equalize for Real Sociedad.
Solabarrieta reacted quickly, bringing on Iñigo Vicente and Odei Arrieta but it wasn’t enough as the final whistle soon came with the match ending in a 2-2 draw. Bilbao Athletic have yet to lose at home since the managerial change, but Saturday’s result will feel like a missed opportunity to climb the table. Next Sunday the Kumeak will be back on the road where they will faced 2nd placed Mirandés.
