Bilbao Athletic had won seven straight games at home going into Saturday’s Derby against Real Sociedad, but getting a good result was going to be difficult. Gaizka Larrazabal managed to score a brace, but the match would eventually end in a 2-2 draw. After the final whistle manager Aritz Solabarrieta shared his displeasure with the media, saying that it was probably the worst game his team has played at Lezama.

“It’s true that we had chances to increase the lead when it was 201, but they made chances too easy for us. I would be lying if I said I was happy with the game we played. We didn’t do well, it was one of the worst matches we’ve played at home. I didn’t have the feeling that we were dominating at any point in the game. It was difficult for us to defend, to attack, and it’s true that we need to play better.”

Despite creating a few chances in front of goal, Solabarrieta thought Real Sociedad made things too easy for his side and they weren’t able to take advantage. Sitting mid-table, the manager recognizes that it will be difficult to finish in the top 4. That being said, the team will not give up on their goal.

“We generated chances, but feeling dangerous was too easy. We have to improve. I don’t think our defensive line was bad. I think that, in the end, defending is something that everyone has to take part in, starting with the two strikers. We need a little more control of what happens in games. After the defeat the other day we are out of the top three and it’s difficult to get that fourth place. It’s not going to be easy, but we’re going to try to finish as high as possible. Neither the players nor the coaching staff are giving up anything.”

Bilbao Athletic started the match with Iñigo Vicente on the sidelines for the second straight game. The forward has been dealing with a thigh injury, but was able to come off the bench late in the second half. “Vicente only trained yesterday so it wouldn’t have been wise to start him”, Solabarrieta explained. “I hope to be able to count on him against Mirandés.” Sunday’s match will be another massive test. Mirandés are second in the table and Bilbao Athletic have yet to get a positive result on the road under Aritz Solabarrieta.
