Athletic President Aitor Elizegi Confident That Aritz Aduriz Will Continue Playing Next Season
La Liga fans have long been unhappy about the regularity of matches being played on Monday nights. From demonstrations to players speaking out it has become clear that the league needed to change things. On Thursday La Liga President Javier Tebas announced that the league is looking to move the Monday games to a weekend slot which has been met with a lot of excitement. Athletic President Aitor Elizegi spoke with Marca about the changes and believes it was the right things to do.
“It’s a good sign that, among all of use, we are looking for a more comfortable situation. It’s clear that Monday games are probably the most difficult ones to schedule for any team in the Primera and for any city that hosts a football match. The league is changing it because they understand La Liga and they understood that they had to make an effort. Surely you have to keep working so there are fewer Monday games and more on the weekend.
As is usually the case with Elizegi, he was more than happy to discuss other matters. Not surprisingly, he was asked about the future of Aritz Aduriz. The President showed confidence that the striker will continue playing next season and also hinted at a future role with the club whenever he does hang up his boots. “Aduriz is at home, really, he already knows what he is going to do”, said Elizegi. “Aduriz will decide where he wants to be after he does retire. He could be at Athletic, right? We’ll see.”
The President was also asked about potential transfer targets, but answered in more generalities. “We always dream about possible signings”, he began. “Javi Martínez, Ander Herrera, Nacho Monreal, Kepa Arrizabalaga…we always dream.” The summer transfer window is still far away but the Lions are expected to pursue Fernando Llorente and Javi Martinez. Elizegi, along with Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta, wants to make Athletic as strong as possible moving forward.
