Yeray “We Have To Go To Valencia With Very Clear Ideas”
Since Gaizka Garitano took over as the manager of Athletic, Yeray and Iñigo Martinez have formed what is arguably the best center-back pairing in all of La Liga. The two have been in sensational form and the Lions will look to win their third straight game on Sunday when they travel to the Mestalla. Yeray recently spoke with Euskal Telebista where he admitted that the team could starting thinking about qualifying for Europe.
“We have to go there with very clear ideas, doing what we have been doing so far. If we get the victory, which is what we want, it will be the last impulse that we need for next week to think about Espanyol and going up to those UEFA spots in the table. They usually play with two forwards. I don’t know who will play, but they have great options in Rodrigo, Gameiro, and others. Those strikers are fast. They find space well, although this year it’s been harder for them to score. We know perfectly well how they can score goals.”
Yeray went on to highlight the fact that Garitano is getting the best out of the players because his style of football works to their strengths. That has brought clear improvement and the team is happy with the changes.
“Now with Gaizka we are seeing that we are more secure, more solid in defense. It’s happening because we defend from the forwards to the goalkeeper. I think it’s another way of playing that, in the end, makes use of our strengths. We have come out reinforced in that aspect.”
If Yeray continues to play at this level he could soon be called up to the Spanish National Team. “I try to do the best I can to improve the team in each game”, he said when asked about the possibility. “If God wants it and one day I’m called to the National Team, it would be an incredible dream.” Playing on the international stage excites the 24-year-old, but for now Yeray is only concerned with helping Athletic continue their fantastic run of form.
