Ball Movement A Major Theme In Training Ahead Of Valencia Clash

Gaizka Garitano wants the team to be ready for Valencia’s press (AC)

For the second straight day Gaizka Garitano led Athletic’s training session in public. Fans were free to come out to Lezama to watch the team prepare for Sunday’s match against Valencia, but that won’t be the case on Thursday or Saturday. On those two days the team will train behind closed doors, but the session will be open on Friday.

Wednesday’s session began with the players working with weights under the guidance of Juan Iribarren. Afterwards the team played games on smaller fields with the same emphasis as the previous day. Garitano has made it a major point to protect the ball at the back and play it forward quickly without losing possession. Valencia are a team that like to press in the final third and the Mister wants to ensure that the Lions are prepared for it.

Once again Aritz Aduriz and Iñigo Lekue were the only players who didn’t participate in training. The pair worked on the sidelines with Xabier Clemente as part of their recovery. Aduriz is recovery very well and sources say that he could return to training sometime around the international break in a few weeks. If that does happen, his return would give Garitano another dangerous weapon to add to his system.
