Lezama Weekend Recap: Important Wins At An Important Time
Bilbao Athletic 4-1 Real Oviedo
The home and away form of Bilbao Athletic has been worrying since Aritz Solabarrieta took over as manager in December, but Saturday’s 4-1 win over Real Oviedo was a step in the right direction. Asier Benito scored three goals and assisted on the fourth (scored by Asier Villalibre) to lead the Katxorros to a victory which could help build momentum in the matches ahead. Bilbao Athletic still trail the promotional playoff zone of the table by 7 points but if they can find a way to start adding points on the road they could become a serious part of the discussion. They will have that opportunity on Sunday when they travel to Logroñés.
CD Basconia 4-2 Ordizia
CD Basconia extended their unbeaten streak to 8 games when they defeated Ordizia 4-2 on Saturday. Juan Artola scored a brace while Gorka Agirre and Javier Rudi aded a goal of their own. The victory now has the team just one point off of Balmaseda for 4th in the standings. On Sunday Basconia will travel to Pasaia where another win could put them in the promotional playoff zone of the table.
Oberena 1-2 Athletic Juvenil A

Next they will face a massive test on Sunday when they host second-placed Real Sociedad at Lezama.
Athletic Juvenil B 1-1 Real Sociedad
There was plenty of excitement in the buildup to Saturday’s fixture between Athletic Juvenil B and Real Sociedad. The Katxorros came into the match with a three point lead over their rivals at the top of the table. Several first team players actually came to Lezama to watch the match including Aritz Aduriz, Dani García, Unai López, Ander Iturraspe, and Iñaki Williams who watched proudly as his little brother, Nico Williams, scored a decisive goal. The match would end in a 1-1 draw, but it was a good result for Athletic who kept their place at the top of the standings and will now travel to Beasain on Sunday in hopes of extending their 8-game unbeaten run.
Betoño 0-3 Athletic Cadete A
Like the Juvenil A team, Athletic’s Cadete A also seem to have found a needed rhythm. On Sunday they won their third straight match with a 3-0 victory over hosts Betoño. Erlantz Palacín scored a brace and Galder Bilbao added the third as the Katxorros earned another vital three points. They current sit 6th in the league table, just four points off of Antiguoko for 4th place, and could climb even higher on Sunday when they host second-placed Eibar at Lezama.
Bizkerre 1-1 Athletic Cadete B
After seeing their two game winning streak snapped last weekend it was important for Athletic’s Cadete B team to get back on track as they traveled to Bizkerre over the weekend. Lander Arenal would score the team’s only goal in a 1-1 draw which was enough to see the Katxorros keep their place at the top of the table. Their lead over Leioa is now just one point which makes Sunday’s game against Indautxu at Lezama a key fixture.
Lagun Artea 0-2 Athletic Infantil A
The Athletic Infantil A team is still perfect following the weekend’s 2-0 win on the road against Lagun Artea. For the second match in a row it was a close game, but the Katxorros came out on top and still hold a massive lead for 1st place in the league table.
