Iago Herrerín “This Was The Most Important Game Of The Season”
Iago Herrerín played an important role in Athletic’s 1-0 win over Huesca on Monday night, making a few vital saves in the second half to keep the clean sheet. After the game he was quick to praise the defenders who have made things easier for him over the past few months. The Lions have been playing without fear under manager Gaizka Garitano and it’s leading to better results.
“There are some animals in this team…Yeray, Iñigo, Capa, Yuri, De Marcos. Defensively this team is crazy and animated. You have to play without fear. Once a team loses that fear they are more dangerous. We had nothing until we got the penalty. It was a close game and we had times where we were forced to defend, but were able to get the desired result.”
Herrerín went on to call Monday’s victory the most important game of the season to this point because it saw the Basques move 7 points clear of the relegation zone. Despite climbing to 11th in the La Liga table the team is refusing to talk about possibly qualifying for Europe.
“This was the most important game of the season because it takes us away from the relegation zone. It’s an advantage we have over those below us, but we must continue this way. You have to value results like this. The team has taken all three points and we are on a roll, which really helps. We aren’t talking about Europe.”
Garitano may have forbidden his players from talking about Europe, but it is becoming a realistic possibility. After the victory over Huesca the Lions are just 4 points off of 7th place and could move into the top half of the table with a win over Eibar on Saturday. It’s going to take another great performance to get a positive result, but this team is proving that they can play with anyone in La Liga right now.
