Bilbao Athletic 4-1 Real Oviedo: Asier Benito Hat-Trick Leads Kumeak To Victory
Bilbao Athletic have been the picture of consistency under Aritz Solabarrieta, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. The Kumeak have won every single game at Lezama and lost every time they’ve played away from home. That was the case again last weekend when they fell 2-1 to Gernika in stoppage time despite playing most of the second half with a man advantage. The disappointing defeat made it very important to take all three points against Real Oviedo on Saturday.
Solabarrieta started a very strong lineup and it wouldn’t take the team long to start causing problems for their visitors. Just a few minutes into the game Asier Benito got a header that was sent over the crossbar and Bilbao Athletic were awarded a corner kick. Iñigo Vicente played it short to Iñigo Muñoz who immediately swung a cross into the box. This time Benito didn’t miss as his header beat the keeper and gave the Katxorros an early 1-0 lead.
Real Oviedo would respond just 10 minutes later when Steven blasted a shot on goal from just inside the box. Hodei Oleaga was able to get his hands on the ball, but parried it up which saw the ball fall into the goal to level the score. The visitors nearly took the lead a few moments later when a pass was played into the box. Luckily, Oleaga left his line quickly and slid to claim the ball.
The level score wouldn’t last long in the end. Muñoz and Vicente combined well around the right side of the box and Oviedo tried to clear the ball which fell to Benito. With only the keeper to beat he smashed a shot into the back of the net to give Bilbao Athletic a 2-1 lead. From there they began to take more control of the game and really put their visitors on the back foot.
Things got crazy around the 30 minute mark when Bilbao Athletic nearly scored at the far post from a corner kick. The ball was loose and the team got off a total of four shots, one of which hit the post, but they were unable to put any of them into the back of the net. It had the opportunity to become a hugely missed opportunity, but Asier Villalibre made things right when he finished off an assist from Benito to make it 3-1 just before halftime.
The match became tighter in the second half with Bilbao Athletic not looking to take too many risks and Real Oviedo being careful not to leave themselves exposed when attacking. Benito would eventually add his third goal of the match when he converted a penalty that was won by Vicente. Both sides would have a few half chances throughout the rest of the game but the scoring was over with Bilbao Athletic having won 4-1 to take three important points.
Depending on the other results to come, Bilbao Athletic could end the weekend as high as 5th in the table and just 4 points off of the promotional playoff zone. If they are seriously going to compete for promotion they will have to start getting points on the road. The Katxorros will have another opportunity to put an end to their losing streak away from home on Sunday when they travel to take on Logroñés.
