Aritz Aduriz In Danger Of Missing The Rest Of The Season With Ligament Damage In Right Knee
When Aritz Aduriz pulled up limping in a Copa del Rey match against Sevilla back in early January no one thought it would be anything serious. His right knee had collided with a defender and the striker was in obvious pain. He would continue playing and even scored a goal that would eventually be ruled offsides. However, immediately after scoring that goal he was limping again and called for a substitute.
After the game Athletic announced that he had suffered a bruised knee and the expectation was that he wouldn’t miss much time. Weeks passed and Aduriz was still unable to join his teammates in training. Then, on the final day of January, the club revealed that the 38-year-old would be forced to miss an additional 4-5 weeks out of precaution due to ligament damage.
Now the story has taken an even worse turn. According to Alberto Santacruz of Oye Athletic, Aduriz is in danger of missing the rest of the season. The ligament damage in his right knee is serious. In an effort to avoid the need for surgery he will have to be sidelined for an extended period of time which means that he could miss the remainder of the campaign. That being said, Santacruz also reports that it’s Aduriz’s goal to be back on the field before the end of the season and he will work hard to make that happen.
If there is any good news in all of this it’s the fact that Athletic have played well without Aritz Aduriz. Iñaki Williams is doing a fine job as the striker in Gaizka Garitano’s system, but the Lions would prefer to have Aduriz available as well. On the flip side, this could potentially mean even more than simply being without Aduriz for the rest of the season. At 38 years old this could very well be the end for the striker. Athletic have put a one-year renewal offer on the table and it will be up to Aduriz to decide whether or not he wants to continue playing football.
