Markel Susaeta And Athletic Club Will Reportedly Start Contract Negotiations In The Coming Weeks
By starting Sunday’s match against Barcelona, Markel Susaeta made his 501st appearance for Athletic Club. The 31-year-old is just the 5th player in history to eclipse 500 matches for the Zurigorri and he’s within striking distance of even higher numbers with Andoni Iraola (510) and Jose Etxeberria (514) just in front of him. In fact, the Captain could move as high as second all-time at some point in the near future, but for that to happen he must first renew his contract.
Susaeta’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season and so far the club has yet to contact him over a renewal. The Lezama product has already voiced his desire to stay at his boyhood club and, although he’s now playing a lessened role under Gaizka Garitano, Athletic want him to continue as well. Sources expect conversations to go quickly once the two sides do finally sit down to discuss the situation and that day may be just around the corner.
Robert Basic of El Correo has reported that Susaeta and Athletic will officially begin contract negotiations in the coming weeks. Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta has put a priority on renewing manager Gaizka Garitano before addressing the expiring contracts of players and once that is complete it will be Susaeta’s turn to put pen to paper on a new deal. The Captain has no desire to play anywhere else and reaching an agreement on an extension should be very easy.
Markel Susaeta joined Lezama when he was just 9 years old and is already a living legend at Athletic. Several sources agree that he and Athletic will easily come to an agreement on a new contract, with some even taking the renewal for granted at this point. It’s difficult to imagine a case in which Athletic Susaeta doesn’t sign a new deal, but if that does happen there are a few unnamed clubs who are interested and monitoring the situation closely.
