Iñaki Williams Is Dedicated To Athletic Despite Interest From Other Clubs
It’s nearly impossible to count all the times that Iñaki Williams has openly stated that he has no desire to leave Athletic and wants to retire a club legend. He’s constantly mentioned the fact that the club has given him and his family everything and loves Athletic more than anything else. He has no plans to leave, but that won’t keep others from showing interest in the forward.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS a big club from England came calling for Iñaki in January. In the end they were turned away by the 24-year-old’s €84 million release clause as well as the fact that he had no interest in leaving the San Mamés. It certainly wasn’t the first time that a European club tried to sign Iñaki. Over the summer he received regular interest from Italy and in the past he’s also rejected the likes of Liverpool.
Athletic have protected themselves well. When the Lezama product renewed his contract through 2025 in the midst of Liverpool interest, it included a €80 million release clause that increases every year. In June it will rise to €88 million and in the final years of the deal it will be as high as €108 million. In all honesty, we may never even get to see the clause grow that large because he’s also admitted that he would be willing to sign a new deal without a release clause like his best friend Iker Muniain.
After winning the La Liga Player of the Month award for January Iñaki gave an interview where he once again proclaimed his love for Athletic. “I have always said that I am very happy here”, he told Mundo Deportivo. “This is where I want to be. I feel very loved and valued. I have always dreamed of being here and the truth is that I dream of being here for many years.”
Iñaki Williams is a dreamer and his biggest dream is to spend his entire career at Athletic and become a legend. “For me it would be a dream to beat a lot of the records here, score a lot of goals here, and end up being a legend like Txopo”, he continued. “Renewals like Iker’s make people see that they still believe in the feeling and it makes the younger ones see what Athletic means. I would be willing to do the same because I feel and love Athletic more than anything else. I am very grateful to Athletic.”
The interest from other clubs isn’t going to go away, and it shouldn’t. Williams is growing into a fantastic footballer and that is always going to catch the eyes of others. However, he doesn’t care who are monitoring him or scouting him, he only wants to succeed at Athletic. We may never know which club from England tried to sign the forward last month or even which clubs from Italy wanted him last summer, but it doesn’t matter. Iñaki Williams doesn’t care about the interest.
