Espanyol Emerging As Serious Contenders To Sign Athletic Club Goalkeeper Alex Remiro
In 136 days Alex Remiro’s contract with Athletic will officially expire and he will be moving on. Despite President Aitor Elizegi’s desire to convince the 23-year-old to sign a renewal and stay at his boyhood club Remiro has made the decision to leave and is already fielding offers from interested clubs. At this point the majority of Athletic fans are ready for Remiro to be gone, but he is taking his time deciding where to play next.
Several clubs have already reached out to Remiro with interest, but for the last few months Real Sociedad have been the ones leading the race. Others such as Monaco, Huesca, and even Barcelona have made serious inquiries and now there is another contender. According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, Espanyol have been in contact with Remiro and the communication between the two sides has been positive.
Current Espanyol manager Rubi actually coached Remiro at Huesca last season while the goalkeeper was away on loan. The pair still have a good relationship. Add in the fact that the Catalans would be able to guarantee the 23-year-old regular playing time and they are really starting to stand out as favorable destination.
The report goes on to state that nothing is settled at this point. Remiro will take the time to weigh all of his options, but both sides are optimistic that an agreement can be reached. Others clubs will still be pursuing the goalkeeper over the months ahead, but there is a very real chance that he could become an Espanyol player this summer. In the meantime, Alex Remiro will continue training at Lezama with his Athletic teammates.
