Beñat Misses Training At Lezama With Thigh Discomfort
Athletic’s have been playing sensational football under Gaizka Garitano and the partnership of Dani García and Beñat has a lot to do with the team’s impressive form. Unfortunately, García will be unavailable on Monday night, as the Lions travel to take on Huesca, after being shown his 10th yellow card of the season over the weekend. Mikel San José is expected to start in his place but there may even be another change.
Beñat missed Wednesday’s training at Lezama with what Javier Beltrán of AS is reporting as right thigh discomfort. The 31-year-old was seen on the sidelines with Aritz Aduriz for a while as he worked with Xabier Clemente before eventually going back inside the sports facilities for the rest of the session. He was also absent on Monday, as was Yuri Berchiche, but sources claimed that the two were given the day off for recovery. The good news is that Beñat is expected to be ready to play at El Alcoraz according to Beltrán, but if that doesn’t prove to be the case it would make things quite interesting.
If Beñat is unable to play it will leave Gaizka Garitano with a difficult decision to make. Ander Iturraspe, Unai López, Mikel Rico, Peru Nolaskoain, and even Raúl García are all options to start alongside San José, but things would be much more challenging for the Basques. Beñat’s status will certainly be monitored very closely over the next few days, but the hope and expectation is that he will be cleared and in the lineup.
On a more positive note, Unai Nuñez returned to training on Wednesday after leaving Monday’s session with hip discomfort. The 22-year-old performed every part of the session normally and will be available for the Huesca match barring any unforeseen changes. Yuri Berchiche was absent from the session but he was given permission due to the fact the he became a father on Tuesday and is with his family.
Athletic will be back in training on Thursday and all eyes will be fixed on how much Beñat is involved in the drills. Only the first 15 minutes will be open the media so it will be hard to gauge the midfielder’s status. No matter who is available, Gaizka Garitano is already putting together his game plan for Monday night’s match which will be yet another must-win game for the Zurigorri.
