Iñigo Vicente won the Cantera Deportiva Balón de Oro for 2018 (CD)

Athletic starlet Iñigo Vicente is a real gem and someone that the club believes will become an important player in the years to come. Over the summer he had the opportunity to train with the first team under Eduardo Berizzo and will get that chance once again at the start of next season. He’s played exceptional football for Bilbao Athletic and it seems like only a matter of time before he gets called to the team by Gaizka Garitano who actually included him in the squad for two matches last month.

Vicente continues to receive immense praise and on Tuesday he was awarded the Cantera Deportiva Balón de Oro for 2018 which is given to the best player in the Segunda B. The newspaper covers youth football in Bizkaia and also recognized Jonma Vega (Sestao River) and Andoni Ortiz (Getxo) as the best players in their leagues.

Last season Vicente was promoted to Bilbao Athletic where he scored 10 goals in 32 matches and this year he’s been even better. The 21-year-old has scored 7 goals and provided 9 assists while regularly standing out as the most electrifying player in the entire league. Athletic extended his contract back in December which saw Vicente renew with the club through 2023 and raise his release clause from €8 million to €40 million.

Cantera Deportiva began giving out the award back in 2002 and it has had good results. So far 10 players who have won the Balón de Oro have gone on to make their debuts in the Primera with several of those being footballers from Lezama. Iñigo Vicente now joins the likes of Beñat, Urko Vera, Ibai Gómez, Unai Albizua, Guillermo, Iñaki Williams, and Asier Villalibre as Athletic players who have won the award and it won’t be long before the 21-year-old gets his chance to play at the San Mamés.
