Unai Nuñez Leaves Training With Hip Discomfort
Athletic returned to training at Lezama on Monday following Sunday’s thrilling draw against Barcelona at the San Mamés. As is usually the case, the starters worked on recovery while the rest of the squad and some youth players trained together under the order of manager Gaizka Garitano. However, one player was unable to complete the session which could put his availability for the next game in question.
At one point in training Unai Nuñez started to experience discomfort in his hip. He tried to keep going but the pain didn’t go away and he soon went to talk with Dr. Angulo who had him perform a few different exercises and then sent the defender inside. The players will have Tuesday off before returning to training on Wednesday which will give Nuñez a day to rest and hopefully be able to train. If not, he will be monitored closely with each passing day.
Yuri Berchiche and Beñat did not train at all on Monday but it wasn’t due to injuries. Both players were given a rest day after the demanding match against Barcelona and are expected to be back at Lezama on Wednesday and ready to play in Monday night’s match against Huesca. Peru Nolaskoain also returned to training after missing last week’s session and playing with Bilbao Athletic against Gernika on Saturday.
The team will begin preparing for Huesca on Wednesday and Garitano already knows that he will be without a few key players. Aritz Aduriz and Iñigo Lekue are both still recovering from injuries, while Dani García and Oscar De Marcos will miss the match due to yellow card suspension. It will be up to Mikel San José and Ander Capa to step up in their absences and it certainly helps that Garitano will have the entire week to put a game plan together.
