Lezama Weekend Recap: CD Basconia Continue Impressive Run, Two Players Make Juvenil A Debuts
Gernika 2-1 Bilbao Athletic
Aritz Solabarrieta had the chance to pick up his first points on the road as the manager of Bilbao Athletic over the weekend, but once again the team fell short. The hosts opened up the scoring in the 32nd minute but were also shown a straight red card which put the momentum in the favor of the Katxorros. Asier Villalibre pulled level in the 64th minute and it looked like the match was headed for a draw until Gernika scored the winner in stoppage time to take all three points. It was arguably the most disappointing loss of the season and now the team will start preparing for Saturday’s home game against Real Oviedo.
Santutxu 0-1 CD Basconia
CD Basconia have been in incredible form since Iban Fuentes took over as manager back in December and on Sunday they extended their unbeaten streak to seven games with their 5th victory over that span of time. Ewan Urain scored the only goal of the game in the 19th minute as the team held on for a 1-0 victory over hosts Santutxu and have now moved into 7th place in the league table, just three points off of the last promotional playoff spot. Next up is a home game against Ordizia on Saturday and the chance to continue their impressive run.
Athletic Juvenil A 1-1 Txantrea
Saturday was a special day for Eneko Clemente and Nico Williams who both made their debuts for Athletic’s Juvenil A team against Txantrea in what ended in a 1-1 draw. Txantrea took a 1-0 lead into halftime before Nico Williams came on for Diego Fernández in the 52nd minute and scored the equalizer just before the final whistle. The Katxorros are now on a three game unbeaten streak and have only lost once in their last seven matches. On Sunday the team will hit the road for a game against Oberena.
Antiguoko 1-2 Athletic Juvenil B
Athletic Juvenil B faced a difficult challenge on Saturday as they traveled to take on Antiguoko and keep their place at the top of the league table. Goals from Beñat De Jesús and Nico Serrano led the team to a 2-1 victory which was their 7th straight victory and now Athletic hold a 3 point lead over Real Sociedad for first place in the standings. The biggest game of the season will be played on Sunday when Athletic host Real Sociedad at Lezama and the winner of that match could very well be lifting the trophy at the end of the season.
Athletic Cadete A 3-0 Danok Bat
Last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Tolosa snapped Athletic Cadete A’s two game losing streak and they were eager to secure three more points on Saturday when they hosted Danok Bat at Lezama. Erlantz Palacín, Iker Varela, and Ibai Asenjo all found the back of the net as the Katxorros cruised to a 3-0 victory and have now moved into 6th in the league table, just three points off of 4th place. They will look to extend their two game winning streak on Sunday when they travel to Betoño.
Athletic Cadete B 0-2 Barakaldo
Athletic Cadete B saw their two game winning streak come to an end on Saturday when they fell 2-0 at Lezama to visitors Barakaldo. Their lead over Leioa at the top of the table was cut to just one point which makes Sunday’s trip to Bizkerre extremely important. A win could build their lead, but a loss could see the Katxorros fall into 2nd place in the standings.
Athletic Infantil A 2-1 Getxo
Despite playing their closest game of the season, Athletic Infantil A are still perfect after defeating Getxo 2-1 at Lezama on Saturday. Aimar Vicandi scored both goals for the Katxorros. The team has now won all 15 of their games so far this season and boast a +108 goal difference. They will put their winning streak on the line once again when they travel to Lagun Artea.
Abadiño 3-3 Athletic Infantil B
Athletic Infantil B put an end to their two game losing streak on Sunday when they played hosts Abadiño to a 3-3 draw on the road. It wasn’t the desired result, but the point was valuable and the team played a strong match. Now San Mamés 2006 will host Montefuerte at Lezama on Saturday.
Cultural Durango 1-4 Athletic Infantil C
Athletic Infantil C also snapped their losing streak of three games with an impressive 4-1 win over Cultural Durango on the road. It was a much needed result and complete team performance from Alirón 2006 who will be back in action on Saturday when they host Padura at Lezama.
