Iker Muniain “We Had Some Tight Moments And Then Chances To Win The Game”
When Iker Muniain came on the field against Barcelona just after the hour mark it completely changed the game. His creativity going forward helped Athletic generate more chances and they likely would have won the game if not for some amazes saves. After the match the 26-year-old said that the point was a good result, but couldn’t ignore the fact that they had opportunities to beat the league leaders.
“It is a good point that we added against a great team. We must emphasize this result because we played against some of the best players in the world. Barcelona have a lot of quality and we were able to put them in trouble. Their goalkeeper was the most outstanding player and that adds value. We had some tight moments but we managed to hold on and then we even had chances to win the game.”
Athletic have only lost one of their nine league games under Gaizka Garitano and Muniain was quick to point out the terrific form of the team. He had no problems with starting the game on the bench and was happy to contribute in a positive way when he was brought on for Markel Susaeta.
“We are in a good dynamic. The game against Real hurt us and so it was important to continue adding points. Doing that against this type of opponent is never easy. Not starting? The coach is the one who decides. This is the match that he designed. I was able to come on in the second half and I tried to do as well as possible.”
Athletic will now start preparing for Monday night’s game against Huesca which will be another chance for the Basques to add points and climb the table. A win could see the Lions move as high as 10th in the standings, but it’s going to be a challenge. Dani García will be suspended for the match, as could Oscar De Marcos, which leaves Garitano with some more tough decisions to make. Regardless, Athletic are playing scintillating football and have all the confidence in the world right now.
