Unai Simón Returns To Training Ahead Of Barcelona Clash
It’s been an interesting week for Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón. He was almost forced to miss last weekend’s Basque Derby due to discomfort in his right knee which saw Alex Remiro included in the squad list for the first time this season. In the end Simón would make the bench for the Lions but the potential injury wasn’t necessarily over at that point.
The 21-year-old would go on to miss training Tuesday through Thursday which put him in doubt for Sunday’s clash with Barcelona at the San Mamés. It was believed that Remiro would have the opportunity to make the team for the first time this year, but now that doesn’t appear to be the case. Simón finally returned to regular training on Friday and is expected to make the squad for the fixture.
Yuri Berchiche and Yeray both missed Friday’s training, although sources say it was out of precaution to keep the pair well-rested ahead of Sunday’s match. Gaizka Garitano led a light session at Lezama that also included some foot-tennis matches to help the players unwind and have some fun. Unai Nuñez, Alex Remiro, Beñat, Iñigo Córdoba, Mikel Balenziaga, Dani García, Ander Capa, and Markel Susaeta all left the session early.
As expected Aritz Aduriz and Oihan Sancet continued to train apart from the group. Iñigo Lekue and Peru Nolaskoain did not train at all with both players recovering from separate injuries. The team will be back at Lezama on Saturday at 6:00pm in a private session which will be their last opportunity to prepare for the clash with Barcelona at the San Mamés.
