Alex Remiro Will Decide His Future At The End Of The Season
Athletic President Aitor Elizegi made it a top priority when he won the December elections to convince Alex Remiro to reconsider his future with the club. At the time the goalkeeper had told Athletic that he had no intentions of signing a contract renewal and would be leaving at the end of the season. Elizegi and Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta did enough to make the 23-year-old entertain a new offer, but not much has changed.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS the club’s offer was very similar to the previous one that was put in front of the goalkeeper and it was quickly rejected. Remiro’s situation hasn’t changed because he is still refusing to renew and plans to leave the San Mamés once his current deal expires on 30 June. The only difference is that the current Board will allow him to be used by manager Gaizka Garitano if needed instead of relegating him to the sidelines.
With his contract expiring in just a few months Remiro is free to negotiate with other clubs and, despite rumors that he has already agreed to a contract with Real Sociedad, Beltrán claims that the 23-year-old hasn’t made any decision about where he will go. Several clubs have shown interest in Remiro including Barcelona, Monaco, Espanyol, Huesca, Girona, and Real Sociedad but for now he will weigh up all of the options to choose the best place to play next season.
At this point it is extremely unlikely that the relationship between Remiro and Athletic will be repaired. The goalkeeper feels as though he hasn’t been valued and the offers he’s been given do not reflect his quality and what he’s worth. Likewise, Athletic believe that he hasn’t proven himself worthy of top wages yet and are willing to part ways while trusting in others at the club and Lezama. The soap opera is moving closer to a finale with each passing day and the only mystery right now seems to be where will Alex Remiro go next.
