Athletic Club Interested In Signing Numancia Star Alain Oyarzun
Due to the club’s unique player policy Athletic are constantly watching and scouting potential transfer targets with the goal of improving the team. In recent years the Lions have signed the likes of Iñigo Martinez, Yuri Berchiche, Dani García, and Ander Capa but there are always others being monitored. One specific name has been confirmed by Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta.
In an interview with Radio Marca Alkorta admitted that Athletic are interested in signing Numancia winger Alain Oyarzun. “Alain is a player that we already know well and we know how he plays”, the Sporting Director began. “There are players who arrive late and explode and surprise you, so you have to be vigilant. He is a player who entered our philosophy and someone we are following with a lot of affection.”
Oyarzun was born in Donostia and joined Real Sociedad’s academy when he was 12 years old. He would eventually reach the first team in 2014 featuring in two Copa del Rey matches and was officially promoted the following season. The winger would leave on loan for Mirandés in January of 2016 and played very well but suffered a knee injury the following preseason. After spending last season with Real Zaragoza Oyarzun signed a contract with Numancia through 2022 where he has exploded as one of the top players in the second division.
This season the 25-year-old leads the Segunda with 8 assists and has also scored 3 goals. He’s been one of the best wingers in the league, while also playing a lot of minutes in the midfield, and has caught the eye of several clubs who inquired about him during the winter transfer window. Former Athletic Sporting Director José María Amorrortu scouted Oyarzun a few times according to Miguel González of El Correo and now Rafa Alkorta has continued the interest. Real Sociedad are also said to be monitoring their former academy graduate.
Alain Oyarzun was always poised to become a special player when he was with Zubieta and now he is starting to play the best football of his young career. If he is signed by a La Liga club he wouldn’t be the first player to finally reach the top flight later than expected, which was also the case for Dani García and Yuri Berchiche. As long as he continues to play at this level it is a very real possibility that bigger clubs will be interested in signing the versatile attacker this summer.
“With other clubs we must be aggressive and respectful at the same time”, Alkorta said when discussing the possible transfer signing. The next few months will be important as the club will be scouting the Numancia star, among others, as they plan for potential summer signings. For now Alain Oyarzun’s contract with Numancia runs through 2022 and contains a €1.5 million release clause.
