Iker Muniain “My Idea Is To Finish My Career At Athletic”
Back in December Iker Muniain changed football in Spain forever when he signed a contract extension with Athletic that did not contain a release clause. Since then two other teammates have done the same and when Ibai Gómez was purchased from Alavés he did it as well. In an interview with Cope Muniain said the idea had been in his head since Josu Urrutia first discussed it nearly two years ago.
“This was something we had never seen before. It was the first time and then some teammates did it that way too. It fills us with happiness. I had heard Josu Urrutia talk about it for a year and a half. It stayed in my mind and I thought ‘I’ll do it’. When they called me to renew I told my representative that I wanted to do it this way and that’s what we did.”
Muniain knows what the contract means, and that’s why he did it. He has no plans to leave Athletic and wants to finish his career at the club. Maybe in the future he would consider going abroad at the end of his career, but right now even that isn’t viewed as a possibility by the 26-year-old.
“This means that at no time can I leave, but I don’t want to leave. No club can sign me. My idea is to finish my career at Athletic and play only in this shirt. Perhaps in a moment in the future I could consider playing in a so-called exotic place of world football (China, Japan, the United States), but it would have to be at the end of my career and even now I would say no, that won’t happen.”
Iker Muniain has already made 371 appearances for Athletic Club and could surpass 400 next year when he will turn 27. The Lezama product hopes to reach historic numbers for the Zurigorri and retire an Athletic legend when his career eventually comes to an end. For now, he’s solely focused on helping the team be as successful as possible and on Saturday the Lions will face off with Real Sociedad at the Anoeta for the latest Basque Derby.
