Ibai Gómez “We Can’t Let This Defeat Hurt Us Mentally”
Ibai Gómez started in place of the suspended Oscar De Marcos in Saturday’s Basque Derby, but wasn’t able to make his presence felt. The Lions fell behind 2-0 in the first half and the 29-year-old told reporters after the game that it was extremely difficult to mount a comeback.
“In the first half they were more intense and when you go behind 2-0 before halftime it’s difficult to turn it around. They played very well. We lacked clarity and once they took the lead they played little and benefitted from their lead. Points, intensity, and organization was missing from us.”
Athletic have played a defined style of football since Gaizka Garitano took over as manager, however Ibai admitted that Real Sociedad did a good job of disrupting their system which had a big impact on the outcome. The loss may have hurt, but Gómez highlighted the importance of not letting it affect the team’s mentality going forward with another big game ahead.
“Real did disrupt what we were trying to do and we were less organized that we have normally been. Every time you lose it hurts. What we have to do now is correct the mistakes that we made and think about next Sunday. We can’t let this hurt us mentally. If you win two games you are up and if you lose two you put yourself back down. Now our goal is preparing for Barcelona, that’s the only objective. But thing defeat can’t hurt us mentally.”
Ander Capa was shown a yellow card in the second half and will miss the game against Barcelona. Oscar De Marcos will have to start at right-back which means that Ibai Gómez could once again be in the starting lineup. Getting a positive result against the Catalans won’t be easy, but playing at the San Mamés will help the Lions who will need a good performance to continue climbing the table.
